REEU Students complete research internships in IBC, CSS, and USDA.

In collaboration with the USDA Agricultural Research Service and the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, the Institute of Biological Chemistry hosted the USDA-NIFA-funded Research and Extension Experience for Undergraduates program. This year (2026), eleven students from the University of Puget Sound, Gonzaga University, Eastern Washington University, Oregon State University, Whitman College, Soka University of America, Cornell University, and Washington State University participated in the program. In addition to conducting laboratory-based research projects across plant biochemistry, plant physiology, soil microbiology, and agriculture, the students gained hands-on experience through field trials and attended field days at the Spillman and Lind research farms. The program concluded with the students presenting posters highlighting the results of their research at the Undergraduate Research Symposium organized by the Office of Undergraduate Research.
